about doing comics by muura about doing comics by muura
:iconmirabean: asked me how I make my comic and instead of writing a lengthy response to her, I decided to illustrate visually for everyone. This would be a Q&A-bit for my webcomic but I'll just shove it here individually. (Linking En tu thrie here as well: [link] since it's what we're talking about yo)

I hope this helps someone! ANYONE!

Thank you so much for this! :heart: I've never made a whole comic before, but soon I'll try to make a 24 hour one and this helped me decide on a lot of technical stuff! :iconasdfghplz:

good that you write out everything first, because that's just what i'm doing with my 18-year-old story! (i figured i might as well start it since it's been around so long...)

This is wonderful :3
I adore seeing how other people do things, especially comics- being something I'm involved in as well. Comparing and contrasting work styles and such is crazy helpful to me :3
YOUR method specifically sorta puts my mind at ease :'D I've taken classes on making comics and have been presented with complex method after complex method and... >¬>; Its nice seeing that others can produce quality work with only the simplest of tools!

I'm sorry if you get asked this a lot, but do you think you could someday write a bit more about this technique of drawing so spontaneously that you learned in art school? I'm really interested in how you go about doing this and not having everything look so wonky.
I'll be honest, it took me a while to get used to your style; it's very different from most everything I've seen before in terms of artistic styles. Granted, I've only recently begun to expand my range in artistic taste, but still, I've never seen anything quite like your work, and I've really grown to love the looseness of your lines, though initially they did feel a bit cluttered/chaotic.
I work in ballpoint pen a lot too, so I'm very comfortable with foregoing pencil, but I double over my lines a TON to get them decent-looking, or use a colored ballpoint for a "sketch" base, then finish it in black ballpoint or gel pen. So I've never really been able to get away from needing those underlying sketch-lines to block in where forms should be and all that, and I'm really curious as to how you train yourself to get away from all of that.

...Sorry for my super-long comment, ack! ;v;

Hum!! I indeed should, since people do keep asking about it. I can write about it here too though;

I was at Liminka School of Arts, in the section which studied comics. Our teachers encouraged us to not use erasers and do straight up drawings with ink instead. One of our tasks was also to draw a comic-diary, and it was also encouraged to be drawn as shittily and horribly as possible, without really caring what it looked like. So, well, I practised drawing straight with the comicdiary. After drawing it for the month we were supposed to, I really got hooked into it and kept doing it. I've drawn it now for 5 years. I think that was a huge part of helping with spontaneous drawing, since I didn't once use an eraser or somehow fix my drawings. it came along to my usual work, too!

So I guess long story short.. just practise, practise practise, and don't be afraid to mess it up and draw something so horrible you want to die forever. Failure is a part of learning, I think not letting oneself to make shitty drawings is kind of a stump to many people as artists. It kind of eats you inside if you must make everything perfectly!

Ahhhhh, a comic diary sounds interesting, I might give that a try!
I definitely know what you're talking about, I think, a lot of artists still have a lot of trouble with ever drawing anything that is bad, so they end up sticking to what they know and never really branching out or improving. I'm strill struggling with that myself, but definitely trying to get over it and loosen up a little.
Thanks so much for your reply, it was really useful! I'll keep trying! :]

To me, I think the hardest part to making a comic or anything is trying to be "original" in a story concept.

When I read comics, no matter how "original" the concept or the characters are, if the story and the writing doesn't satisfy me, my interests will not be held by it.. I think concentrating on making your characters likable, your art-style readable and the story something you are pleased with would be more important :) everything has been done before in this world after all, but on the other hand, everyone are unique in their own way.

I draw with just pen, no undersketch, too, and you summed up why perfectly here. I am a perfectionist, so I do tend to draw the same thing over and over and over since I can't erase. But what's the alternative? Tons of dirty half-erased underlines and not as much practice perfecting my form as a whole. Pen-first drawing FTW!

It is nice to here a hopeful point of view. Most of the time I get bogged down with how difficult making comic is. I still think I'll use pencil and underdrawing myself. As I intend to ink and to keep everything accurate and to scale and a lot more realistic. Many sources stress how difficult illustrating is. I like your attitude! Keep it up!

I know right? I've seen a lot of tutorials where you need a HUUUGE amount of tools and everything must be tip top and perfect, it might fit some people but for someone who finds even STARTING really difficult, it can be intimidating. I decided to go with this method because I have so many stories I want to tell that they will never be finished if I spend a week on one page, haha.
Thanks though! Good luck with your comic!!

I admire you for being able to forego sketching with pencil and I adore your style, it's so free and expressive.

I always put off making my comics because I'm too anxious about it not being perfect, so thanks for this, maybe now I'll finally get down to it.

Its kinda funny that you don't really need anything more fancy than pen and paper to make a comic. I really want to make my own comic and I got ideas, but its harder than one would think to get them down on paper.
Anyways, this was very neat. Thanks :)

I'm going to hold a panel in Desucon with ~LEPPU about the very difficulty of making and starting comics. If I get any peculiar ideas, maybe it can be a source for another tutorial. Good luck to you <3
