A comic about a poem in Kalevala which I made half for my own pleasure (always wanted to comic Kalevala), half for a thing..! I don't know if it makes it there, but I'm tired of waiting for a reply so i'll shove it here hurf durf

So, this is the battle between Väinämöinen and Joukahainen. Sadly all the versions on the internet are from the popular edition of Kalevala, which has been censored and molded from the original texts.. I'm reading a non-abridged Kalevala, which isn't as widely known, so this version of the comic might be strange for those who've only read the widely spread edition of Kalevala.

Here's the entire popular edition Poem if you feel like reading it.. [link]

However, since I will NOT translate this (my shoddy english is not enough to do justice to the beautiful language here) my version in a nutshell is as follows:

Young Joukahainen and Old Väinämöinen, both powerful shamans, are traveling a narrow road, and happen to bump into eachother.. they can't pass eachother, unless the other gives way to the other. (In some texts, Joukahainen actually deliberately bumped into Väinämöinen, because he wanted to challenge him.) They refuse to give way, because they're so proud, so Joukahainen suggests a singing competition.. Väinämöinen agrees, and Joukahainen sings of all the things he knows, mountains, birds, fishes.. Väinämöinen gets FURIOUS, because HE WAS THERE WHEN ALL THOSE THINGS WERE BORN, HOW DARE YOU!!! Then he sings Joukahainen into the swamp, trapping him in and not letting him go. (Our national hero is basically a huge dick full of himself, it's great.)

Joukahainen panics and doesn't want to drown into the swamp, and he begs Väinämöinen to let him go, promising him gold, horses.. Väinämöinen is rich though, so he doesn't care much. He doesn't let him go until Joukahainen promises him his sister, Aino.

Joukahainen leaves, humiliated and crying. He weeps all the way to his mother's and father's house, because he's ashamed that he promised his only sister to an old man. His mother is pleased though, because Väinämöinen is rich, powerful, and wise, and who wouldn't want a dude like dat in their family.

All's well that ends well..? Not really, if you know what's going to happen to Aino later on. :C

This was made entirely with a Jetball streamer.. so there was no sketching or planning whatsoever, which makes for some HILARIOUS mistakes to tell all your kids about! Feel free to crit anyways, though.

Okay so since you asked for a critique I'm gonna give it a go. So, you mentioned that you did little to no preparation of the lines before starting inks, it's a very good talent to have to make your first lines smooth and good-looking. What that tells me is that you're incredibly comfortable in your style, which I've been a fan of for a long time now. I don't think i have to critique the beauty and mastery of the art, because I think I've long said my peace about how much I like it.

But let's get down to specifics, the detail in the piece is nice, all the little lines really come together to make a very effective picture. I did notice the 'mess-up's you mentioned, like V's steed's legs, and other such small things. Though like I heard you say, you're quite good at making your mistakes sort of not matter. the overall picture is never really all that effected by it, though I did take away from the impact. You probably already know this, but if those mistakes were fixed, it would only be another detail to wow your audience instead of sort of 'background noise' lines.

also, the panel before V starts yelling at J (where he says '...') feels kind of weird, because he only looks kind of annoyed at what J sang, and then suddenly flips. I might've suspected maybe more surprise or more of a hint of anger in his expression before he starts yelling. It sort of gives the feeling that he's being fake-mad, if his first reaction was just mild annoyance (which might be true to the real story XD) but if that wasn't what you were going for, I'd be more wary of making the character's feeling consistant.

It's hard to critique much else because of how beautiful the whole thing looks. I really wish you'd get published and famous so that I could buy your stuff over here too. But as far as overall impact, this would've been a really cool comic to see some watercolors on. But then again, that would only just be adding to what already works really well. As well as other people, I'd be interested in seeing more. Your synopsis was enough for me to follow everythign that was going on in the comic, and I'd like to see what happens to Aino.

Anyway, always a pleasure to see more comics from you!
