So this is pretty much my least favourite comic I have ever done! Let me explain:
I suddenly decided to participate in a children's comic contest, I marathoned this in one day, (they're A5-pages so it's allright) finished the last pages while being badly sleep-deprived, and I chose the character-designs from a pile of characters I designed when I was about 13 or 14 and which I had left to their own devices until I had a use for them, but I noticed that they hadn't aged well and I probably would hate these two if it wasn't for ~imunchtee drawing me loads of nice fanart of them. Also; I really can't relate to stories for children. xD I ended up censoring myself a lot, because I wasn't sure what would be appropriate, and ended up with a terrible fake-cutesy story about morals! Terrible! When I was a kid I enjoyed more mature entertainment and cartoons that nowadays wouldn't be acceptable for children, so I immediately started thinking of terrible things to make comics of, when I'm supposed to think they're for children. My original idea had plague doctors, domestic violence, living in the streets, and cannibalism. I was told it was not a good idea. rofl but since I ranked along the best nine comics and got this printed in a book, (and translated into swedish!) it's allright. I'll shove this here just for the effort I used on it. i guess it has a "cute"-factor too or something haha. but yeah I atleast learned something from this if nothing else. yaay. I'm most embarrased that this if the first long comic ever that I have done which is also in colours, urgh.. "Veli" means "brother" in finnish and it's both a word for "brother" and a given name. "Buglings" are originally "ötökeiju" which is basically a "bugfairy", but that doesn't sound too goods so. And yeah Veli really looks like Viktor haha. He's older than Viktor so I can't really help that!! Finns can read the original finnish version here: [link] Veli and Pumpernickel are my characters! Comments
SOKRATES AND PLATON
oh gosh why is the idea of a child messing up those philosopher's names so adorable. also: My original idea had plague doctors, domestic violence, living in the streets, and cannibalism. I was told it was not a good idea. rofl fffff I would have read it to my hypothetical children. It sounds really interesting. And they're going to find something to break their brains a bit someday, so why not? actually on the topic of the comic, however- I really like the watercolor effect and how... obvious it is? Like I think it's really cool to see and imagine how the watercolor moved across the page while you were making it, like with the "Did you start it?" pair of panels. and the buglings are really cute and adorable in their own ugly little ways. I imagine whatever they are saying in their little language is probably very rude. And said in a murmuring little squeaky tone so it's all the funnier because it sounds innocent. Oh such a nice comment, thank youuu
Haha you know I have to immediately admit that I translated this in a hurry, so you know, Socrates translates to Sokrates in finnish, and Plato bends into "Platonille" when said "to Plato", so that was.. sort of a mistake on my part.. but man I love that you made a plausible explanation for that one xD I'm not sure at all if these characters are supposed to be children or some sort of ethereal ageless beings but that's so cute so let's just say that they're kids. Haaa the original idea wasn't of course that blatant, I would just hint that there was something more vile going on behind the scenes and have the actual comic concentrate on something else entirely but I suppose I just have to draw it out one day. Ah oh man I'm glad I put this up here because people are making such cool obvervations, like yours about the language! It makes me definitely more fond of these characters which helps a lot to soften the blow of the general hate, haha. I'm sure they are terrible pottymouths. |
